Tom Foulsham

Tom Foulsham’s idiosyncratic works start as explorations of a current fascination. This might be an investigation into an overlooked attribute of a particular object or an alternative application of a material or process. His inventive structures point to a realm of extraordinary possibilities, where, he explains, things behave in surprising and unpredictable ways and ‘everything is a big tangle of connectivity’. Through the mechanical advantages offered by leverage and counterbalance, Foulsham harnesses the weight and energy of seemingly innocent objects and amplifies them to powerful effect, undermining expectations and inspiring viewers to re-evaluate their everyday environment.

Foulsham studied Architecture at the Bartlett, UCL (2001-2004) before gaining an MA Design Products from the Royal College of Art (2007-2009). His one-off works have been included in the exhibition In Praise of Shadows at the V&A (2009) and in solo shows at Minnie Weisz Studio, London (2010), and Marsden Woo Gallery Project Space (2011). In 2010 he was commissioned to animate the furniture in Restless, an exhibition of works by Ron Arad at the Barbican Art Gallery, and collaborated with Laurie Anderson on a major piece for the show Laurie Anderson, Trisha Brown, Gordon Matta Clark: Pioneers of the Downtown Scene, New York 1970s, also at the Barbican Art Gallery in 2011. In 2012, he was one of three recipients of the W Hotel Designers of the Future Awards and exhibited at Design Miami Basel. Foulsham has also worked at Heatherwick Studio and frequently collaborates with leading artists and designers in the UK and internationally.
